“Drawings and photographs are like oil and water”

without comments

those who know me, know i love comic books as much as a love photos. i was thrilled when i stumbled onto this story at PDNonline. ive been suggesting that ben lowy do a graphic novel of his first trip to Iraq, but draw it himself. maybe this will inspire him.

“Drawings and photographs are like oil and water,” says graphic artist Emmanuel Guibert. “One always wants to kill the other. They are like enemies.”

Despite this esthetic antipathy, however, Guibert’s graphic illustrations blend peacefully and seamlessly with the black-and-white photographs taken by his late friend Didier Lefèvre in The Photographer (First Second Books, 2009), a deeply compelling narrative in words, drawings and photographs. The book, a 278-page graphic memoir, describes Lefèvre’s first mission to Afghanistan for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in 1986, during the Soviet occupation of the country. Tom Kennedy Resigns

without comments

For many months i carried Tom Kennedy’s nametag from the NSC around in my camera bag for good luck. it worked. so now with some sadness and some hope i’m sharing this story i found about his resignation from the Washington Post’s website.

Washingtonpost.com Managing Editor Resigns
FishbowlDC has learned washingtonpost.com Managing Editor of Multimedia Tom Kennedy resigned today, effective February 13th.

I regret to announce that Tom Kennedy has decided to leave washingtonpost.com. Tom, who is recognized throughout the industry as a pioneer in multimedia journalism, joined the Web site in 1998 and quickly began to transform the way we approached visual journalism. In the first year, he laid out a vision to experiment with video and audio storytelling as well as make full use of still photography coming from Post newspaper photographers and wire services. Over time, Tom built a visual journalism program that became the envy of the industry and established benchmarks for video quality in a variety of forms. His accomplishments are too many to name, but among them are leading his team to multiple local and National EMMY nominations and awards, a Peabody award, four successive Murrow awards, two Cine Golden Eagle awards, and many video editing and shooting awards in the NPPA and White House News Photographers Association. Several members of his team were named Video Editors of the Year and one was designated video journalist of the year. His team’s work has also been honored in the Society of News Design, Best of Photojournalism and Pictures of the Year, Batten Award and Online Journalism Award competitions. Beyond his influence on his team, Tom has been a mentor, coach and partner to dozens of editors and producers interested in using multimedia to further their storytelling. I personally owe him a debt of gratitude for his guidance during my early forays into multimedia a decade ago. We will miss Tom dearly. His last day will be Feb. 13.

Dai Sugano created THIS sad and beautiful multimedia piece for the San Jose Mercury News. It is called “Left Behind.”

The staff at the Mercury News is consistantly doing moving and thoughtful multimedia stories. “The Chance to Break Free” is another powerful story from India.
