another shining moment in DC rawk history...

it's funny when you you can look forward to something so much, but you can still dread it. last night was like that. so many things i love all came together at once; friends (happy birthday huddo! i'm glad we are friends.), fort reno and just being so proud that i am part of this community.
i've seen the D Plan change so much, from playing house shows, where the people who showed up were friends, and some young boys who were really excited about all of the tech gear they have, to filling up the black cat two nights in a row with so many young people that i had never even seen at the shows before. it's awesome to see the growth and it is amazing to stand there on the stage at fort reno and look out and see so many people who are all excited about being there. we can all dance and we can all sing a long.
i wonder if it's all over. i wonder if rawk is done in DC. i hope not, and i don't really believe it, but i feel like we've lost something important. fugazi wasn't able to play fort reno this year, and the Plan is for the most part finished, and so many friends i have across the country have decided to be through with their bands. it this a cosmic joke? is it something in the water, or are we evolving?
part of me hopes that as sad as this makes me feel, it is opening up the door for something even better. so here is to the present and future and may we never forget our past. long live the creative minds of the washington, dc metro area.

i hope you were there.

i've decided that the name of my book will be "bands that got tired of being bands, all of the great bands you ever missed." look for it in about another decade.

what is in a name?

chatting with Stacy "i can never find stuff i NEED on the internet, but i can always find crap" Shelton always ends with her introducing me to more time consuming, brain eating websites. today was no different.
today she introduced me to several variations of the classic porn name generator.
my personal favorite is the smurf name generator which has to work, because it dubbed me pantsless smurf. wow.

some other goodies are...

1. the hobbit name generator. as a hobbit, i'd be called "Drogo Chubb of Deephollow."
2. the wu name generator. it called me "Big Wicker Ventriloquist."
3. the gnome name generator which says i'm "Sir Drink a Lot." umm. whatever.
4. the OZ prison bitch name generator where i was "The One-Eyed Ogre."
5. the jedi name generator where i was "Holda Baeni of the planet Morphine!"
6. the reggae name generator which calls me "Natty Rico."
7. the heavy metal name generator which named me "Damian Necronamous."
8. the pirate name generator which calls me "Black Davy Bonney." aarrrggghhhh.

don't trust the mr. t name generator. it is sketchy and wants your SSN. i think it is a front for identity theft.
stacy needs a blog worse than anyone. she always comes up with the stuff people need to know about.

oh, so tell me what names you come up with. i need to know this stuff.

when the revolution comes...

got the news today. the revolution will be here in December. that is when Nat Geo will be showing it's first all digital story, shot by none other than Joe McNally. i for one and psyched. i think this has been too long in the making, but i'm thrilled it is almost here.

i would say they picked the right man for the job and i can't wait to see how the files look in the Geographic.

run to the hills...

wow-o-wow.

i think i have a new favorite band. i can only hope that sometime soon they'll make it to jaxx, "where old metal bands go to die."
be sure to check their video of the trooper. this is the high bandwidth one. they have a smaller one on there somewhere.

there is a list of 16 other Iron Maiden tribute bands from around the world on there, though i'm sure none are quite as interesting as the Iron Maidens. some other wacky tribute bands are around too. check KISS, Metallica and Judas Priest.

C H A R B O

i always wonder about people who have big offices. what do they do in there? what do people in authority do in an office.
today i had to go shoot scott charbo.
scott is rad. such a nice guy.
he is the chief information officer for the USDA, and he has a big office. today he was pretty uncomfortable i think cause he didn't really have anything to do.
i think this shot sums it all up.

lunchtime with the famous, or at least infamous...

Lunched with Melina today. Ran into her at the HRC presidential forum.
Was awesome to see her back in town.

If you are in DC on Sunday you should head to the Smithsonian and get her to sign a poster for you from her exhibit Changing the Face of Power: Women in the U.S. Senate.

she is rad, and she makes people smile, so go see her already.

laura knows... spiders are your friends.

i was reading this and i found the following...

11:36 am Tuesday June 16 2003
YOU DO NOT SWAT SPIDERS

I woke myself up from a dream at 6am. I woke myself up by yelling, very loudly and very sternly. It was not a scream but a shout, one which could have been heard from across the street, at least, I'm certain.. I was dreaming of a tall man, standing near a brick wall. A spider crawled out of a crack in the wall, but it was a spider from the turtle family. Big turtle shell, turtle head, but long fuzzy crab-like spider legs. One leg was longer than the rest, over a foot long. The legs were soft, like a fuzzy plant leaf. The tall man started to swat the spider, bapping it on the head. Bapping it on the shell. I got up from my seat on the ground and approached the tall man. I looked at him extremely sternly; he reacted with a defensive scowl as he pulled out a gun from his pants.
I then shouted right in his face "YOU DO NOT SWAT SPIDERS"

--------

i believe this. i support it. i have long been a spider safety advocate. i try not to harm any insect, or animal, but spiders are special. they eat all of the bugs that you really don't like and the are really easy to live with, cause they don't want to bother you.
spiders are our friends.

one of the reasons i have often had distaste for canadians (note: this has since changed. i have gone to canada and met some really swell people, and amy and bob always were great.) is i was working on a film in arkansas with a canadian film crew. they constantly complained about the bugs. constantly.
after all of the shooting, we were going to have a party with everyone at the place i was staying. so i went with william to pick up some of the cannucks, and we were standing outside their motel room waiting and talking, and there was a spider, and i kept trying to stand in front of it, so it would run off and not accidentally get in someone's way, and after about 15 minutes of us standing there, it ran in between my legs and one of the guys standing there with us stepped forward and intentionally squashed it.
i was furious. i wanted to punch someone, but instead turned around and kicked a dent in my car door, screamed and then sped off.
these guys could complain all day long, but they couldn't think logically, and understand that the spider is nothing but helpful to them. but instead of coexistence, these guys wanted to wipe out everything else. jackasses.
toronto is great though...

Geniuses, Criminals Do Best Work in Their 30s
Reuters
Jul 9 2003 5:55PM
LONDON (Reuters) - Geniuses and criminals may not seem to have much in common but they both do their best work in their 30s -- and mainly to impress the opposite sex.

When Satoshi Kanazawa, of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, studied biographies of prominent, mostly male scientists he discovered that they made their key discovery before their mid 30s, around the same age that criminal behavior peaks.

He believes the male competitive urge to attract females is a driving force for the scientific and criminal achievements, according to New Scientist magazine.

"They do whatever they do in order to get laid," said Kanazawa.

He added that the competitive drive decreases with age and as men's priority shifts from competing for women to taking care of their offspring.

"Kanazawa also found that marriage dampens the drive in both arenas," the magazine added.

this is independance...

tonight.

this holiday means a lot to me, more than just being American, this is my city and this is the biggest party we have. this is the first year in so long that i've been so far away from the national mall on the fourth. i decided to watch from near the Pentagon instead. it was nice. fine really, but the view wasn't as dramatic and you couldn't FEEL the fireworks.
i think being right there in it makes a difference. i think it applies to so many things. i am compelled to be right in the middle of the moment, to have things be overwhelming, to experience all of the energy they can give. that isn't the only way to experience things, but i find it suits me. i think everyone should get in the middle of it at some point.
people miss out on so much. they just try to observe things from a distance. i can think of dozens of bands that people missed out on, because they stood in the back. they would say they like the band, but how many of them can say they felt the band, or more importantly, they felt the experience.
or the protests. when you are there with people screaming, or the police shoving you, it makes a difference. it makes the moment.
happy independance day America.
