i stink therefore i am... um... home.

i am the stinkiest thing i can imagine. greyhound and sickness made me this way. it doesn't help that i've been reading dispatches for the past 12 days. it makes me feel stinky too.

am i a hipster?

i discussed my thoughts on the attack on hipsterism with that girl and i tried to play devil's advocate, but assumed i was an objective observer. then she informed me that i AM a Hipster. so it seems that might null and void my entire discussion.

i still doubt i qualify though.

Huddo is Love

View image
at the friendly neighborhood Galaxy Hut last night i went in the bathroom and noticed that my college roommate was watching me pee. Huddo introduced me to the Hut and years later he still rules it in so many ways.

two words

and she said...

C********4: you are the most incredible combination of this childlike exuberence, intoxicating charm and bewildering talent
C********4: so much that it all has to be two worded things
C********4: one word isn't enough to describe you

i think this is one of the two best things anyone has ever said about me.

the future is here...

corvette.jpg
i remember in the early 80s i was at my grandfather's flipping through an issue of Popular Mechanics and i saw a picture of the "NEW" corvette that wouldn't be released for at least a couple more years.

i was blown away because it looked so FUTURE. i can remember the feeling i had seeing it, thinking we were really on to something and that it could change everything. i felt like the future was there. and in so many ways it really was. beyond the idea of a snazzy car, that doesn't seem so snazzy anymore. our dreams were taking shape.

we take for granted the technology that we have at our disposal. the magic doesn't seem magical anymore, and probably the worst part is that we expect it. then we forget about it.

movies are a good example. no one questions how or why they work, we just go pay our $9 and sit back and expect it, but less than a lifetime ago, it was still the magical experience.
i'm relatively young, and when i started in photojournalism, i made a black and white print of every image that was going to go into the newspaper. i was around for the AP Leafdesk scanners, which at the time i was thrilled to use, but now i'd rather cut off a toe than wait 20 minutes for a crappy scan. i used to tote the the Nikon NC2000e camera around and every day someone would ask me what television station i worked for, because the camera was so big. then when the Nikon D1h came out and the paper i worked for bought them, i was thrilled because again i felt like the future was here.

shooting that camera made it possible for me to shoot the Pentagon on 9/11 and never have to drive out to the newspaper to send them the images. i just stopped at a collegue's house and got on her computer. i was thrilled to be part of the digital revolution.

now it is just a couple of years later, and i own a slew of gear, and i realize that i'm not impressed or amazed by it anymore. instead it has changed me, and maybe not for the better. i almost never consider shooting film anymore. the clients don't want it, and it is so much more work for me. now, i sometimes even get annoyed by having to download, rename and caption everything, even though i do it with one of the best programs i've ever used.

the technology has spoiled me, or i let it spoil me. i guess this is a case of me losing site of what is honestly amazing, and forgetting how to appreciate it.

maybe what i really need is to go find the new Popular Mechanics and sit down and learn to be amazed by all of this again.

shot this story for the Post the other day.

Free Ride Home

i was told three pics ran in the paper, but i haven't seen it yet.

these old guys cracked me up. they were all awesome. but so many people from the neighborhood didn't want me hanging out making photos. sometimes it is tough to be the white guy.

very interesting...

you're fired.

so maybe bill gates won't control everything. he doesn't seem to like this.

not sure if that is good or bad though. will it create competition, or will technology suffer because they will only be looking out for their product. i think it is one of 3 options; 1. lil' billy owns a lot of apple stock, so he doesn't really care either way.
or 2. he thinks the apple market is so small it won't support itself if apple is responsible for all of the products.
as a mad happy apple user for my entire life, i urge people to be brand loyal. support better products, especially since apple makes them.

i ♥ apple.

friends.

slept more than should be allowed by Law.

then ho and clark and i went on a guy trip to the micro center in search of blank CD-Rs. clark wound up leaving with a new mouse, a computer game called Carmageddon 3 (yes i'm serious) and huddo got the CD-Rs and a power strip. i didn't find anything there that i couldn't live without, but just a little while ago i went to target and i am now the proud owner of 2 new rolls of masking tape and a new wet/dry dust mop (great for hardwood floors). i think i'm going to spend my evening using it in the nordic cabin.

interesting fact. lots of girls in target on a saturday night, and a lot of them seem psyched on a guys buying dust mops. weird.

documentary days.

holy crap it's friday the 13th!!! woo hoo. have fun. wear masks.

to celebrate this festive holiday i encourage you to go watch Spellbound (which might be in a theater near you) or (which you can go rent) Devil's Playground.

both are classic documentary style, and if they don't knock your socks off, then we're through. you're fired. the end.

thanks Giuliana.
